Signs Your Heating or A/C Needs Work

Climate-control faults tend to arrive gradually, so it is easy to adapt to them until the weather makes them impossible to ignore. Any of these is worth checking:

• A/C that blows warm, or cools far less than it used to
• No heat, or heat that only arrives after a long drive
• A musty or sour smell when the fan first comes on
• A blower that works only on certain fan speeds
• Windows that fog up and will not clear
• Rattling, squealing, or clicking when the A/C engages
• A sweet smell or damp carpet in the front footwells

A sweet smell with damp carpet usually means a leaking heater core, and that one is worth looking at promptly because the coolant it is losing belongs in the engine.

Why a Top-Up Is Not a Repair

Air conditioning is a sealed system. If it is low on refrigerant, that refrigerant went somewhere, and adding more without finding the leak simply buys a few weeks before you are back where you started. It also lets the system run low on the oil that circulates with the refrigerant, and a compressor starved of oil is a much larger bill than the seal or hose that was leaking.

We test the system and locate the leak first. Once we know it holds, we evacuate and recharge it to the exact weight your vehicle calls for, because both under- and over-charging make an A/C system cool poorly.

Heat and Defrost Are a Safety System Here

In a Scarborough winter, climate control stops being about comfort. Defrost is what clears an iced windscreen and keeps it clear, and a car whose heater cannot keep up is a car you cannot see out of properly on a February morning. Ontario's rules on driving with obstructed vision are not lenient, and a failed blower or a plugged cabin filter is enough to cause it.

The other half of the year brings the opposite problem: humid GTA summers put the A/C under sustained load in stop-and-go traffic, which is exactly the condition that exposes a marginal compressor or a partially blocked condenser. Both systems are cheapest to fix in the shoulder season, before you actually need them.

Cabin Air Quality and That Musty Smell

The smell that appears for the first few seconds after you switch the fan on is one of the most common complaints we hear, and it is rarely the refrigerant. Moisture condenses on the evaporator every time you run the A/C, and if it does not drain and dry properly it grows bacteria and mould in a dark box behind your dashboard. A cabin air filter left in place too long makes it worse and restricts airflow at the same time.

We check the cabin filter, the evaporator drain, and the evaporator itself rather than masking the smell with a spray. On many import vehicles the cabin filter is genuinely awkward to reach, which is precisely why it so often turns out never to have been changed.
