Why Have a Car Inspected Before You Buy

A used car is one of the larger purchases most people make, and it is routinely made after a fifteen-minute test drive on roads the seller suggested. A pre-purchase inspection is the cheapest insurance available on that decision: it costs a small fraction of the purchase price and regularly finds several times its cost in deferred maintenance.

It does one of three things. It gives you the confidence to go ahead, it gives you a documented list to negotiate the price with, or it tells you to walk away. All three are worth having, and the third is worth the most.

What We Look At

The car goes up on the hoist, which is where most of the useful information is, and we work through it systematically:

• Fault codes read from the vehicle's systems, including stored and pending
• Engine condition, leaks, and signs of overheating or neglect
• Transmission behaviour, fluid condition, and shift quality on a road test
• Brakes, suspension, steering, and tire wear patterns
• Underbody and structural corrosion, especially on local cars
• Evidence of previous collision repair, overspray, or panel replacement
• Cooling, charging, and electrical systems
• A road test to assess how the car actually drives

Signs of previous accident repair deserve a mention on their own. Bodywork is our trade as well, so we know what a repaired panel looks like from underneath — mismatched paint texture, overspray on seals, replaced hardware, filler where there should not be any. That is often the single most valuable thing an inspection turns up, because it rarely appears in the conversation with the seller.

What You Get

You get a clear picture of the car's condition and a straight answer about what it needs: what is wrong now, what is going to need attention in the next year, and roughly what those things cost. If we would not buy it, we will say so.

We have no interest in the outcome of your purchase, which is the entire point of having the inspection done somewhere other than the seller's shop. Our opinion is worth something to you precisely because we do not care whether you buy the car.

Buying an Import or European Car

Imports are where a pre-purchase inspection earns its keep most reliably, because the gap between a well-maintained example and a neglected one is expressed in much larger numbers. Deferred maintenance on a European car does not stay proportionally cheap the way it might on a base-model commuter, and an appealing price on a luxury vehicle is often appealing for a reason that shows up on the hoist.

We work on European and Japanese vehicles daily and run dealer-level diagnostic equipment, including factory Mercedes-Benz XENTRY software. Reading the manufacturer-specific modules matters here, because a seller can clear a dash light before you arrive, and stored or pending codes frequently survive that.

If you are buying privately, note that a pre-purchase inspection and a Safety Standards Certificate are different things. The certificate records that the car met the minimum provincial safety standard on the day it was inspected, and it is what you need to plate it. The pre-purchase inspection tells you whether the car is a good buy. Plenty of vehicles pass the first and fail the second, and we can do both in the same visit.
