Japanese Car Mechanic & Repair in Scarborough

An independent Japanese car mechanic in Scarborough with the manufacturers’ own diagnostic software, full hybrid and high-voltage capability, and mechanical and body repair in the same shop.

The Japanese Makes We Service

The shop is called Import Auto Specialist for a reason. Japanese vehicles have been a core part of the work here since 2004, and that means all of the mainstream marques rather than a shortlist:

If your make is not listed, call (416) 913-2394 and ask. The list above is what we see most in Scarborough rather than a limit on what comes through the door, and we work on domestic vehicles alongside them.

Factory Diagnostic Software for the Japanese Marques

A generic OBD-II scanner reads engine and emissions codes and stops there. That is enough to tell you a light is on, and rarely enough to tell you why. We run the manufacturers’ own software instead:

  • Techstream for Toyota and Lexus, including hybrid system data
  • HDS for Honda and Acura
  • CONSULT for Nissan and Infiniti

Each of these is single-brand, which is exactly why we hold several rather than relying on one universal tool. They read manufacturer-specific fault codes rather than generic equivalents, reach the modules a generic scanner cannot see, and carry out the resets and relearns a repair needs afterwards. On a Toyota or Lexus hybrid, Techstream also reads the hybrid system data that is otherwise invisible.

Hybrid and High-Voltage Work

This is the part most independent shops will not take on, and it is worth knowing before you accept a dealer quote.

We do full hybrid work, including high-voltage battery diagnosis and repair. Toyota and Lexus hybrids are everywhere in the GTA, they are now old enough that battery and inverter faults are ordinary rather than exotic, and most shops respond by referring the car on. Signs worth having read properly:

  • A hybrid system warning or a drop in electric-only running
  • Reduced fuel economy that appeared gradually
  • The engine running far more than it used to
  • A hybrid battery cooling fan running loudly or constantly
  • A warning after the car has sat unused for a long period

High-voltage systems are not something to approach casually. The car is de-energised and the system isolated before any HV work begins, and the diagnosis is done with the manufacturer’s software rather than inferred from symptoms. The practical difference is that a fault a dealer would resolve by replacing a complete hybrid battery assembly can sometimes be traced to a specific module, and out of warranty that difference is substantial. Call with the warning your car is showing and we will tell you honestly whether it is something we should look at.

What We Repair on Japanese Vehicles

Everything a Japanese car actually needs, with the diagnostic depth behind it:

Mechanical work and bodywork happen in the same building, which matters after a collision because cameras, parking sensors and radar hardware sit directly behind the panels that get damaged.

Maintenance That Actually Extends These Cars

Japanese vehicles have a deserved reputation for lasting, and that reputation is conditional on a few things being done properly rather than skipped.

Oil specification matters more than owners expect, particularly on engines that call for a thin modern grade and on any engine with a timing chain. Chains do not have a replacement interval the way belts do, but they depend entirely on clean oil at the right level, and a chain-driven engine run long on tired oil is where expensive noise comes from. Where an engine uses a belt instead, that interval is real and is not worth stretching.

CVT fluid is the other one. Many Japanese models use a continuously variable transmission, the fluid degrades, and the specification is not interchangeable with conventional automatic fluid. Routine work is handled here too: oil changes, tires and wheel alignment, safety certificates, and pre-purchase inspections if you are still shopping.

Japanese Cars and Scarborough Winters

The mechanical side of these cars often outlasts the bodywork here, and that is the honest weak point of running one in a salt belt.

Rocker panels, wheel arches, subframes and brake lines are where road salt does its work, and it does it from the inside out, so by the time it is visible on the surface it has been going on a while. Brake lines are the one to take seriously, because they corrode quietly and fail with very little warning. Rear suspension mounting points are worth a look on older vehicles too.

None of that is a reason not to run a Japanese car here. It just means the underside deserves attention that the odometer alone would never suggest, and that catching rust early is far cheaper than meeting it at a safety inspection.

What Japanese Car Owners Say

Common Japanese Car Questions

Which Japanese makes do you work on?

All the mainstream ones: Toyota, Lexus, Honda, Acura, Nissan, Infiniti, Mazda, Mitsubishi and Subaru, which has its own page. We work on domestic vehicles alongside them. Call (416) 913-2394 with your year, make and model and we will confirm what we can read and service on your specific car before you come in.

Do you have Japanese factory diagnostic software?

Yes. We run Techstream for Toyota and Lexus, HDS for Honda and Acura, and CONSULT for Nissan and Infiniti. Each is single-brand, which is why we hold several rather than relying on one universal scanner. They read manufacturer-specific fault codes, reach modules a generic tool cannot see, and perform the resets and relearns a repair requires afterwards.

Do you work on hybrids, including the high-voltage battery?

Yes, including high-voltage battery and inverter diagnosis and repair, which is work most independent shops refer out. The car is de-energised and the system isolated before any high-voltage work begins, and the diagnosis is done with the manufacturer’s software. A fault a dealer would resolve by replacing a complete battery assembly can sometimes be traced to a specific module, and out of warranty that difference is large.

Are you a Toyota, Honda or Nissan dealer?

No. We are an independent shop on Warden Ave. that has been running since 2004, with a licensed 310S technician and the factory diagnostic software named above. We are not affiliated with or authorised by any vehicle manufacturer.
