Signs You Need an Alignment

Alignment is one of the few things on a car that costs you money continuously while you ignore it, because it wears out tires you have already paid for. The usual signs:

• The car pulls to one side on a flat, straight road
• The steering wheel sits off-centre while driving straight
• Tires wearing faster on one edge than the other
• A new vibration or looseness through the steering
• The car feels like it wanders and needs constant correction
• You have recently hit a significant pothole or curb
• You have just had new tires or suspension work done

The tire-wear one is worth taking seriously. By the time uneven wear is visible on the tread edge, the alignment has usually been out for thousands of kilometres, and that tire will not recover.

Seasonal Tire Changeovers

Winter tires are not really optional in this climate. Below about seven degrees, all-season rubber hardens and loses grip well before there is any snow on the road, which is why the first genuinely cold morning in Scarborough produces so many avoidable collisions.

If your winters are on their own rims the changeover is quicker and cheaper, and it is easier on the tires themselves. Book early. Mounting, Balancing, and Why Balance Matters

A wheel that is out of balance by a very small amount produces a vibration you feel at highway speed, usually through the steering wheel or the seat. It is annoying, but the real cost is that the same imbalance is hammering the wheel bearings, tie rod ends, and suspension bushings thousands of times a minute.

We balance every tire we mount, check for damage on the inner sidewall where you cannot see it, and fit new valve stems where they are due. On vehicles with tire pressure monitoring sensors, those sensors need handling carefully during the swap and, on many makes, relearning to the car afterwards.

Scarborough Roads Are Hard on Alignment

Freeze-thaw cycles do real damage to local roads, and by March the surface along stretches of Warden, Eglinton, and the side streets is genuinely rough. One solid pothole strike is enough to knock the alignment out, bend a wheel, or damage a tire's internal structure in a way that is invisible from the outside but shows up as a vibration or a bulge later.

The salt matters too. It corrodes wheels — particularly alloys, around the bead seat — which is a common and easily missed cause of a slow leak that keeps coming back after the tire has been checked for punctures twice.

Tires and Alignment on Import Vehicles

Import and performance vehicles tend to be less forgiving here. Low-profile tires transmit far more of a pothole impact to the wheel and suspension, and give the sidewall much less room to absorb it. Many European makes also run staggered setups with different sizes front and rear, run-flat construction, or specific manufacturer-approved tire designations, and fitting something merely similar changes how the car behaves.

Alignment specifications on these cars are also tighter, and some require the full four-wheel setup rather than a front-toe adjustment.
