Signs Your Oil Change Is Overdue

Most cars will tell you when they are ready for a service, either through a reminder on the dash or through how the engine behaves. Any of these is worth acting on:

• An oil change or service reminder lit on the dash
• Oil on the dipstick that looks dark, gritty, or sludgy
• The oil level reading low between services
• A noisier engine, especially a ticking sound on startup
• An oil smell in the cabin or spots on the driveway
• You have lost track of when the last change was done

Oil Changes, Done Properly

A regular oil change is the cheapest insurance you can buy for your engine. We change your oil and filter using the correct grade for your vehicle (full-synthetic or conventional, whatever your car actually calls for) and reset the service reminder. The drain plug and filter housing get fresh gaskets or crush washers where the vehicle calls for them, which is the small detail that prevents a slow seep showing up on your driveway a month later. Why Putting It Off Gets Expensive

Engine oil does more than lubricate. It carries heat away from the bearings, holds combustion by-products in suspension, and keeps the inside of the engine clean. As it ages it loses viscosity and the additive package wears out, so all three jobs get done worse at once.

Left long enough, tired oil turns to sludge and starts blocking the narrow oil galleries that feed the top of the engine. On modern engines that also means starving the variable valve timing and turbocharger of clean oil, and those are the parts that turn a routine service into a four-figure repair. An oil change is one of the least expensive things you will ever do to a car; a seized turbo or a spun bearing is one of the most expensive.

Scarborough Driving Counts as Severe Service

Most owner's manuals list two maintenance schedules: normal and severe. A lot of GTA drivers are on the severe schedule without realising it. Short trips where the engine never fully warms up, stop-and-go traffic along Warden and Eglinton, idling in winter, and the temperature swing between a −20 °C January and a humid August all count.

Short trips are the hardest of the lot, because moisture and fuel that get into the oil never burn off if the engine does not reach full operating temperature. If most of your driving is local errands rather than highway runs, it is worth changing your oil closer to the shorter end of the recommended interval.

The Right Oil Spec for Import Engines

Oil specification matters more than it used to, and it matters most on import engines. Many European makes require a specific manufacturer approval rather than just a viscosity grade, and using an oil that merely looks similar on the bottle can affect emissions equipment and, on some engines, timing chain wear.
